PROPOSED DESIGN

Single-Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) with Appleway Avenue grade separation

This is the only design that will meet all of the project goals. The other designs were studied but not advanced for further consideration.

Construction Cost: $90-100 million

Pros

  • Traffic on US-95 will be elevated on a bridge, and traffic on Appleway Avenue will be lowered so that the two roads no longer intersect, reducing travel times. 

  • I-90/US-95 interchange operates with minimal traffic delay.

  • The SPUI’s capacity exceeds 20-year traffic needs. 

 

Cons

  • Removes intersection of US-95 and Appleway Avenue, changing travel patterns in the area.

Single-Point Urban Interchange with at-grade Appleway Avenue Intersection

Construction Cost: $67-75 million

Pros

  • Maintains intersection at US-95 and Appleway Avenue.

  • Costs less than other alternatives.

​

Cons

  • The close spacing between the SPUI and Appleway Avenue reduces the capacity of both intersections resulting in:

    • A design that does not meet 20-year traffic needs. 

    • Potential for ramp traffic to be stopped on I-90 mainline, creating concerns for safety.

    • Need for triple left turns from I-90 eastbound off-ramp to northbound US-95.

Tight Diamond Interchange with Appleway Avenue grade separation

Construction Cost: $85-95 million

Pros

  • Traffic on US-95 will be elevated on a bridge, and traffic on Appleway Avenue will be lowered so that the two roads no longer intersect, reducing travel times. 

  • I-90/US-95 interchange operates with minimal traffic delay.

  • Meets 20-year traffic needs.​

  • I-90/US-95 interchange operates with minimal traffic delay.

  • Exceeds 20-year traffic needs.

  • Costs the most out of the top four alternatives. 

  • Directional ramps would be challenging to construct and expensive to maintain. 

  • Creates an unwanted aerial visual obstruction.
